Nurgle Pox Walkers

Here's a little preview of something J's been working on in the studio.  Apparently, his friend has quite the big Nurgle army that needs painting. This time around, the focus is on the base colors, and then using different colored inks/washes, to bring out the true colors of Nurgle.  

All paints were Vallejo and Games Workshop/Citadel, with the latter representing the majority of the washes. The base effects were achieved simply with the Vallejo sticky textures, specifically "Black Lava" from the jug.

I hope to post more soon — next stages will be toning down the glossiness with some matte coat, and then the highlights and details will be painted.

Blood Angels Land Raider - Finished Product

Finally, I've finished the Blood Angels Land Raider. Overall, I'm really happy with it, but admittedly, I sped through most of the hand-painted (analog) stuff.  

Initially, this was meant to be a trial of using reds (incidentally, my favorite color to use) in my new airbrush, and indeed, this is the part I am most happy with.  I thought that the shading and highlights worked-out great, and I am glad that I listened to several different sets of folks on different forums that suggested ultra-contrast, since a lot would eventually be obscured by pigments and other weathering elements.

When I put the pigments on originally, they looked perfect: the smoke on the exhaust; the rust on any necessary places; the mud and other dirt caked in the tracks and treads; the spattered mud and other stuff (ash, etc.) on the sides and low back.  However, when I sealed them with the gloss (I used Krylon out-of-the can), it really soaked up the dry look of the pigments, and whilst it fixed itself well to the model, it also ruined the effect of dry dust.

Additionally, the decals are absolutely confounding; they just stick out perfectly (in a bad way), and I really need to find a way to make the decals look like they're one with the model, instead of something that is clearly stuck on. Any suggestions are welcome.

I rushed through most of the analog stuff, as I really wanted this to be an airbrush project.  It could have been better had I focused on that, as a model cannot look good with good airbrush and poor analog, as they must coexist perfectly in a well-balanced gestalt.

Vallejo Sticky Texture Paste (Experiment and Sample)

A while back, I got some of the Vallejo Sticky Textures, and while there are quite a few different selections, I purchased the ones with the greatest contrast:

These are like a wet paste, very granular in nature, that are extremely adhesive.  I was not feeling like doing the usual basing procedure for a dwarf that I am painting for my friend's Mordheim band (Hi, Mat!), so I thought I'd put some of this on.  I'd generally never take a mini this close up (it's an unrealistic size), but I wanted everyone to get the idea of the texture, which, conversely, is hard-to-gauge if you're not close-up on it.

One of the best uses for these are weathering; you can add pigments to them, add paint to them, etc., so that if you wanted to put some dried, stuck-on mud on a vehicle, this would be an easy go-to, and you could augment the color and consistency by adding different pigments, maybe a brownish red paint, matte medium, etc., to the mix.

The Black Lava one is a lot like a airplane tarmac or black-top; it reminds me of an outdoor blacktop basketball court.  These are perfect for sci-fi city-scapes, and I plan on using these a lot with my newly-arrived Sedition Wars minis.
